Corporate function at The Forest of Arden Hotel, Birmingham

September 26, 2014 By Lisa Martin 1 Comment

It was a busy week of gigs for me last week. Thursday saw me heading down the M6 to Birmingham where I was booked to perform at a corporate function in The Forest of Arden Hotel and Country Club.

What a beautiful venue it was. With an impressive golf course and herds of wild deer roaming around the grounds, you would never imagine it was just a few miles away from Birmingham Airport.

Whenever I sing at a corporate function I always find it fun and interesting because I get to meet and work with other businesses and entertainers, and this was no exception.

I performed my Swing show, and was joined onstage by the beautiful Vegas Show Girls.

They certainly added a touch of glamour to the night, with their glitzy costumes and fabulous dance routines (choreographed by Emma-Jane Ashman).

They were also lovely and helpful backstage in helping me with my dress, which seemed to have developed a mind of its own!

Even more glamour and showbiz was to be found in the reception area, where a stunning Marilyn Monroe lookalike was onhand to provide drinks, alongside a very convincing Oscar award ‘living statue’, both provided by top corporate event agency www.steppin-out.co.uk.

Jamie Bennion and his team at http://businessav.co.uk/ took expert care of sound and lights.

Steve Brill of Brillpix Photography was busy all night taking photos of all the proceedings.

A big thanks to Steve for letting me use some of his photographs from the event.

That night I headed straight back up north to Manchester, to break up the journey back to Glasgow. Unfortunately the M6 was not kind to me and I ended up driving for hours due to various road closures – all the while listening to the Scottish referendum results as they came through on the radio.

It was around 3am by the time I reached my hotel – a beautiful little country guest house called Ash Farm in Altrincham.

This was such a charming place in very picturesque surroundings, with very friendly hosts – unfortunately though, I didn’t have much time to enjoy it as I was heading straight back to Glasgow later that morning.  Hopefully I will get a chance to return for a longer stay whenever I’m next in the Manchester area.

That night I was singing at a cabaret night at The Columba Club in Barrhead. It was a lovely night, very well-attended, and lots of funds were raised for Mary’s Meals charity.

On Saturday I revisited one of my favourite clubs, The RAFA in Prestwick, for their annual Battle of Britain ball.

I’ve performed at this event for the past few years now and it’s always a pleasure to return and see all the friendly and familiar faces.

As usual, the dancefloor was packed from start to finish with lots of talented and energetic dancers, and lots of fun was had by all.

Check out this video from the RAFA club, it seems that we had a lot of teenagers in that night! 😉

World War One Centenary Event in Scotland

September 25, 2014 By Lisa Martin Leave a Comment

Preston Pans Royal British Legion was filled with nostalgia this September when they paid tribute to the World War One Centenary on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

The club was very busy with people who had come along to commemorate the centenary.

A fabulous brass band started off the proceedings with their beautiful renditions of World War One classics such as ‘The sunshine of your smile’ and the rousing ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’.

I continued on with the trip throughout the decades with my 1940s World War Two show, followed by some 1950s Rock n Roll numbers to get the audience up dancing.

The fantastic duo ‘Just John and Paul’ took us to the 1960s and really got the crowd going with their superb versions of The Beatles classics.

It’s always a pleasure to work with Just John and Paul as they’re so talented and enthusiastic about what they do, plus they’re both such lovely friendly guys!

Beatles Tribute ScotlandA great afternoon was had by all.

Big thanks to all at the club for organising and participating in such a fabulous day.

Glenburn Hotel Cabaret Shows

1950s tribute show

I will be visiting the lovely Scottish Isle of Bute quite a few times over the coming year to sing at the Glenburn Hotel in Rothesay to perform some of my shows, including 1950s Rock n Roll, Swing and James Bond show.

One of the best things about the Glenburn Hotel is the fantastic staff there – especially the wonderful entertainment team.  Host Gary MacKean is a great favourite among all the guests, providing lots of laughs plus a very popular Elvis tribute act.  John and Marianne form the talented duo ‘Limited Edition’, supplying a wide variety of music for all the guests to enjoy.  They all made me feel very welcome when I appeared there last week performing my 1950s show, so I am very much looking forward to my future visits to the Glenburn this year.

Fancy a weekend away on a beautiful island off the western coast of Scotland?  Then come along and join us at the Glenburn Hotel.

Phone the hotel on 01700 502500 to check what dates I’m appearing and which show I’ll be performing.  Looking forward to seeing you there!

PS, check out the stunning views from the hotel.

(Thanks to John Martin for the beautiful picture)

Vintage Weddings Scotland

February 14, 2014 By Lisa Martin Leave a Comment

Vintage weddings are becoming more and more popular around Scotland these days, as people look to the 1960s, 1950s, 1940s, 1930s and even back to the 1920s for inspiration for their special day.  There are some fabulous vintage wedding suppliers in Scotland, so I thought it would be a nice idea to make a video to showcase their creations.

And what better day than Valentine’s Day to spread a bit of retro romance!

For a suitably vintage musical backdrop I chose the 1930s song ‘What a difference a day makes’.  Dinah Washington won a grammy award in the 1950s for her bluesy take on this song, and so I chose to perform this version (as opposed to the more disco feel of the 1970s Esther Phillips version) as I thought it provided the perfect romantic sentiment.

The video features some wonderful suppliers of vintage weddings from all over Scotland, including the following:

Gavin Macqueen – an outstanding photographer from Glasgow whose unique, creative style is very much in demand at weddings all around Scotland.

La Belle Epoque – beautifully unique hair adornments reworked from antique pieces by the very talented Miriam Davies-Cole.

Make Believe Events – an extensive range of gorgeous chair covers, linens, and event hire items, together with free design consultation.

Fairy Dust Celebrations – deliciously pretty, these bespoke wedding cakes and favours are all homemade and freshly baked, using the finest of ingredients.

Miss Dixiebelle – Vanity Thrills is head stylist at Scotland’s award-winning vintage hair and beauty parlour.  Hair, makeup and nails, together with stunning reproduction dresses, make Miss Dixiebelle your go-to place for that complete vintage look!

Ribbons & Lace – a bridal boutique with a friendly, cosy atmosphere that makes you feel right at home as you take your pick from a stunning array of gowns created by top designers.

A Vintage Tea Party – vintage crockery hire to give your wedding that charming finishing touch!

A big thank you goes out to all the fabulous vintage wedding suppliers for contributing their beautiful images to be featured in this video.

New Year Dinner Dance at Seamill Hydro Hotel

January 6, 2013 By Lisa Martin Leave a Comment

Lisa Martin wedding singerMy first booking of 2013 was on New Year’s Day for a dinner dance at the beautiful Seamill Hydro Hotel in West Kilbride.  This is the first time I’ve been to this hotel – or to West Kilbride for that matter – and I must say I was very impressed, both by the lovely setting, and the friendly helpful staff.

The Seamill Hydro is set in a stunning location – it was dark when I got there, so it wasn’t until I looked out of my window the next morning at magnificent views over the Firth of Clyde that I realised it is right on the seafront.

There were a lot of families staying at the hotel over New Year, and it was obvious the hotel catered for them very well, with a fun kids’ club, and even an old-fashioned Carousel outside in the gardens.  Not to mention all the great leisure complex facilities for the mums and dads!

I was performing alongside the fantastic DJ ‘Cheeky D’ of Cheeky Entertainment.  A true professional, he played all the right songs, and did a great job in getting the crowd up to party on the dancefloor.

All in all, it was a great start to the New Year.  It was quite a mixed crowd in terms of age-range, so I sang a mixture of modern pop songs and older classics, to try and include something for everyone.

Here’s one of the songs I performed on the night; the Nat King Cole standard ‘Let there be love’

James Bond Tribute Show London

December 5, 2012 By Lisa Martin Leave a Comment

James Bond casino showLast weekend I performed my James Bond tribute show for a corporate Christmas function at the beautiful Grand Connaught Rooms  in London. As it turns out, they only needed a short performance, so I flew all the way from Glasgow to London to sing for 20 minutes! Still, it was a great night, I was made very welcome, and it was lovely to revisit London – it’s been a few years since I was last there.

Even  though it was a short show, I managed to fit in all my favourite James Bond songs, including Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey, Nobody does it better by Carly Simon, You only live twice by Nancy Sinatra, plus the latest Bond theme song Skyfall by Adele.

Of course, no James Bond tribute show would be complete without the classic song Diamonds are forever – so here it is!

1940s Show at RAFA Club Prestwick Battle of Britain function

October 8, 2012 By Lisa Martin Leave a Comment

1940s show tribute singerI had the pleasure of performing my 1940s show ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’ recently at the RAFA Club in Prestwick as part of their celebrations to commemorate the Battle of Britain.  What a lovely, warm, friendly club – special thanks go to Del Granger for his help during the evening.

Everybody had a great time, and boy do they love to dance in that club!  The dancefloor was packed from start to finish, with some very smooth movers – quicksteps, foxtrots, jives, rock ‘n’ roll, plus even a bit of line-dancing thrown in for good measure.   We also all enjoyed some good old fashioned singalongs – well, who can resist the lure of those classic songs by such popular performers as Gracie Fields, The Andrews Sisters, and of course the legendary Dame Vera Lynn?

I received some wonderful feedback for my 1940s show asking me to return soon, so hopefully it won’t be my last time at such a welcoming club.

Here’s a link to my rendition of one of the great 1940s songs featured in the show: “We’ll Meet Again”
